Steak & Kidney Pie (With Mushrooms)
Steak & Kidney Pie is one of those traditional British dishes that is worth making. I add mushrooms into mine, but in fact the same recipe can also be used for Steak Pie and Steak & Mushroom Pie. A four-in-one bonus recipe meal deal!

- Prepare the kidneys by peeling off the outer membrane and removing the inside white parts with a pair of scissors. Chop the remaining brown parts.
- Heat the oil on a large pan and brown the onions and smoked meat.
- Mix the beef with 4 tbsp of flour. Add the meat in batches to the pan and brown on all sides.
- Mix together 1 tbsp of flour and the kidneys. Add to the pan and brown the kidneys lightly.
- Add the beef stock to the pan and transfer the whole lot to a large casserole dish. Add in the bouquet garni and cook in an oven at 160°C for 2 hours.
- (twiddles thumbs).
- Remove the bouquet garni from the casserole, add in the mushrooms and leave the mixture to cool for 20-30 minutes.
- Line the rim of a pie dish with pastry and spoon in some mixture. Put on a pastry lid a prick a few times with a fork.
- Bake in the oven at 220° for 20 minutes. Turn the oven down to 160°C and continue baking for another 15 minutes. Serve.
Titli's Tips
The pie filling freezes really well so you don’t have to use it all up at once. Great if you are a small family and you want to have S&K pie next month too!
