Star anise has a flavour which is similar but stronger flavour to the unrelated spice anise. It’s flavour is often described as warm, sweet and aromatic. Star anise is an ingredient of the traditional five-spice powder of Chinese cooking and is also a major ingredient in the Vietnamese noodle soup called phở. It is used as a spice in preparation of Biryani all over the Indian Subcontinent.
