Hawawshi is a delicious Middle-Eastern meat and bread snack. The great thing about it is that you can alter the seasonings and spices to suit. Next time I may add a teaspoon of cumin…. Experiment!
  • 400 g (14 oz) minced meat (lamb, beef, goat, camel, whatever…)
  • 6 pitta bread or similar
  • 1 green capsicum
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 tbsp allspice
  • ½ cup chopped coriander
  • 2 chillis (optional)
  • Melted butter
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Chop the vegetables quite fine.
  2. Mix the meat, vegetables, coriander, allspice and chillis together in a large bowl. Season well with salt and pepper.
  3. Cut pockets into the pitta breads and divide the mixture equally between the pittas.
  4. Brush the pittas with melted butter and wrap each pitta individually in aluminium foil.
  5. Bake in the oven at 200°C for 40 minutes.
  6. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before unwrapping. Eat!
